Become a Bus Driver

TK Schools is currently looking for both full time and substitute school bus drivers to join our growing team. We have routes, field trips, and sports trips. The choice is yours. Great source for extra income!

Requirements of a school bus driver:

  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Good Multi-tasker.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Punctual.
  • Have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass a background check, drug test, and DOT physical.

Steps to becoming a School Bus Driver

Fingerprinting & Background check through Barry County Sheriff 

Your approximate cost: $50. District will reimburse when road test is completed. 


Complete CDL Test at Secretary of State 

You will need to complete the written test for CDL Group B & C, with endorsements P & S, as well as the Air Brake Test.

Your approximate cost: $35. District will reimburse when road test is completed. 


DOT Physical & Pre-employment drug screening.

TK Schools will cover the cost of both.


You must provide copies of your permit, drivers license and physical card to begin your hands-on training. Hands-on training will be at our facility with one of our in house trainers. The average training time for this is around 25 hours (time varies depending on trainee). TK Schools will cover the cost of this training. You will not receive an hourly pay for this training.


You must have your temporary permit for a minimum of 14 days before taking the road test. When our trainer feels you are ready to take the road test we will schedule the road test through a 3rd party testing site (FCG Truck Driver Training School). TK Schools will cover the cost of the road test.


After passing the road test you will need to go the the Secretary of State and get your new license. Be sure you have the CDL groups B & C, with air brakes, P & S endorsement.


After completing all the required steps and getting your CDL you will need take your Beginner Bus Driver Training at Kent ISD. We will schedule this class for you and cover the cost. It will be a 3 day (18 hour) course held at Kent ISD. You will receive training rate pay for this training. You will also need to sign an employment agreement saying you will stay on as a driver with TK Schools for twelve (12) months from your start date or will reimburse the district for the total cost of your training.
