TK Battle of Buildings Scores Bragging Rights for All

Lee art teacher Kathy Bailey used her “unique” defensive skills on the court to wrap up her opponents in big teddy bear hugs. Not to be outdone, high school teacher Danny Thompson snuck up behind Middle School Principal Kelli Wegner and stealthily put his hands over her eyes just as she attempted a free throw.

The opening tip off of the Page vs. McFall game wasn’t like any normal jump ball. Instead, a Page player carefully balanced the basketball on her toe and held the top with her finger as another team member made the “kick off.”

And somehow – the score at the end of the high school vs. middle school game jumped dramatically in favor of the middle school team after a “donation” was given to the score keepers from the middle school bench.

It was all just part of the fun and games at the annual TK Battle of the Buildings this week. The event is held each year as a fun way to raise funds for the high school’s Close Up trip to Washington D.C. In addition, each building participating also gets a portion of funds as fans get to designate which school gets their $2 entry fee.

The stands were filled with families and students cheering on their favorite teachers and their buildings. McFall, Lee and Page schools drew large fan bases for the first three games with students hoisting handmade signs and waving pom-poms.

The final game pitted the high school staff against the middle school staff. The high school student section was dressed in tropical attire complete with grass skirts, Hawaiian leis, sunglasses and flip flops. Beach balls were floating up and down the student section. Across the court the middle school student section chanted cheers at the opposing high schoolers and stormed the floor when the buzzer sounded at the end of the game.

Several raffle prizes were given away and families didn’t have to worry about cooking supper before the games as the concession stand was open with a wide selection.

Aside from all the antics and fun in the games, there was also some very competitive ball played. Each building's team was determined to bring back the bragging rights. By the end of the night, the real bragging rights were claimed by the entire TK district for a fun, family-oriented and community event that once again proved the district is TK STRONG!
