Schools of Choice
Applications
Thornapple Kellogg participates in both the Kent Intermediate School District and the Schools of Choice 105c State plans. All students residing within the Kent Intermediate School District may apply for enrollment in any Kent ISD school that has available openings during the advertised timeframe (usually open during the spring). Students who reside in a district that is within a different ISD which borders the Kent ISD, may also apply under the Schools of Choice 105c plan depending on available openings. Students who have been suspended or expelled may be excluded. Applications for both types of Schools of Choice are below.
Special Considerations for Parents & Students Considering Choice
-
Transportation is not provided for Schools of Choice students; parents must provide their own transportation.
-
The Michigan High School Athletic Association requires students to wait one semester after enrolling in a new district (under Schools of Choice) before they can participate in athletics.
-
Michigan law and the Kent Intermediate Superintendents' Association agree that siblings should be kept together in a single district whenever possible. As a result, siblings of current Choice students may receive preference in filling district openings.
-
A written agreement between the resident district and the Choice district must be in place regarding students who apply through the Schools of Choice 105c and receive special education services/programs as to the responsibility of payment for the added costs of required services/programs for the student.
2011 - 2012 Schools of Choice Timeline and Applications
Students residing in Kent County may apply for Schools of Choice through the Kent County Schools of Choice Plan April 11 - June 3, 2011. Students residing in districts such as Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Ottawa (districts within ISDs which border the Kent Intermediate School District) may apply through Schools of Choice 105c Plan May 16 - June 3, 2011. Thornapple Kellogg will offer 100 openings for kindergarten through twelfth grade. Applications will not be accepted until the first day of timelines. It is not a first come, first served process - applications are collected through June 3, 2011, 4:00 pm. If there are more applications than openings, a blind draw will be held. Parents will be notified by June 17 whether the application was accepted or not.
