Enslen has earned All-Conference Honors during his sophomore and junior years and was also named to the All-District and All-County teams as a junior. Tommy, who is the son of Tom and Lisa Enslen, will graduate with honors this May and is still undecided what he will major in at Davenport. |

Though the temperature outside was in the low teens, Layton Grinage shed his coat while watering the lawn inside his glass-enclosed classroom on Grand Rapids' Northeast Side.
Grinage, 18, is one of about 50 students -- juniors and seniors -- in the agriscience program at Kent Career/Technical Center. They get hands-on training for careers in landscaping.
He and 17-year-old Kammeran Koehl, seniors from Thornapple Kellogg Public Schools in Middleville, tend about 75 yards of Kentucky blue grass from AAA Turf Farms in Hudsonville. The turf this week will be hauled to DeVos Place for the upcoming West Michigan Home and Garden Show. Read more |

MIDDLEVILLE -- Kyle Bailey flipped pages of the dictionary and then ran his finger down the columns until he found it.
"'Telepathic' -- there it is," said Kyle, a fourth-grader as he read the definition.
Then he and his two reading buddies, Nic Sinkler and Cody VanderTil, reread the sentence in "Sea of Monsters" to see how it fit and what it really meant.
"Oh, I get it now," Kyle said. "It's like when you think of something and send it to someone else using your mind." |

Thornapple Kellogg Middle School's "Spirit Day" typically has students clad in orange and black. But last week's event took on a much different look as students and staff donned all things pink to support seventh-grade teacher Mary McLellen, who faces another round of chemotherapy for cancer. McLellen wasn't told about the plan, but it was clear something special was happening when students in a sea of pink t-shirts, skirts, sweaters and dresses filled the halls. |

Superintendent Gary Rider is working with professionals and community leaders to develop a marketing strategy for the Thornapple Kellogg school district. He recently invited more than 80 community leaders to brainstorm ideas and work on plans to showcase the district more. "I was overwhelmed by the support," he said. "We ended up with so many people really wanting to be involved. I think that just speaks volumes for the district and where we were already. Community support is one of our greatest strengths." Rider said the marketing strategy isn't about increasing enrollment or trying to pull students from other areas. It is about making sure people within the district and those from other areas recognize what's going on in Thornapple Kellogg schools, he said. |
